A shop, not a chain

My cousin runs Al Barkah Opticals, an eyewear shop in Oman. The software he looked at was expensive, and built for chains far bigger than one shop in a mall.

So I offered to make him one, for free. It does exactly what his shop does, and nothing more.

One customer, from eye test to counter

One visit touches almost every part of the app.

  1. New prescription: right eye, then left eye

1The optometrist writes the prescription, right eye first.

  2. The counter: products and stock on the left, the customer and cart on the right

2At the counter, frames and lenses go into the cart, linked to the customer and their doctor.

  3. Dashboard with today's revenue, open work orders and low stock

3At closing time, the whole day fits on one screen.

Written the way they already write it

The prescription form
  1. 1

Right eye, then left: the order every prescription is written in.

  2. 2

The same short names optometrists use on paper, so there is nothing new to learn.

  3. 3

Every prescription carries an expiry date.

Built for one small shop

  • It runs on a laptop in the shop. If the internet drops, sales don't. Staff open it from any phone or PC on the shop's Wi-Fi.
  • Receipts print in Arabic and English. Customers expect Arabic. The staff work in English, so the app itself stays in English.
  • Everyone sees only their own job. Things the shop doesn't use simply aren't there, instead of sitting around greyed out.
  • Nothing is ever deleted. Every sale, edit and stock change is saved with who did it, and it backs itself up every night.

Where it is now

It's installed at the shop, and the staff start using it soon. The first busy weeks will show me what to fix, and I'll fix it from there.
